What is maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) grows at high altitudes in the Peruvian Andes mountain. For centuries, maca has been used in folk medicine as an aphrodisiac and fertility enhancer. Due to its nutritional value, maca is considered a superfood. Maca is rich in trace elements, vitamins and minerals, amino acids (vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, boron, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, niacin, sodium, potassium and zinc).[1,16,17] The most active phytonutrients found in Maca are glucosinolates, alkaloids, macamides and makaenes, phytosterols and thiohydantins. [16,21,22]

Maca is also called a plant adaptogen. It naturally helps the body adapt to stressors.[4]

MacaCare™ used in our supplement is an organic extract of maca root (Lepidium meyenii) 10:1.

Maca, men's fertility and libido

Maca may enhance men's sexual drive.[1] The 4-month clinical trial involved 9 men who were given 1,500 or 3,000 mg of maca extract daily. Both at the beginning and at the end of the study, the concentration of the following hormones was determined: lutropin, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin, testosterone and estradiol. Maca supplementation has been shown to increase both the number and motility of sperm in the ejaculate.[7] Maca may also support women's sexual health.[4]

Benefits at a Glance:

  • Suppots men's fertility and boosts libido
  • Supports hormonal balance and ease menopausal symptoms
  • Shows antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties
  • May support mood and cognitive health

Maca, hormone balance and menopause symptoms

Maca may support women's hormonal balance. Some studies suggest that alkaloids and macamides - bioactive compounds found in this plant - may regulate hormonal balance. [2] Maca is one of the most frequently recommended supplements for menopausal women.[4]

Maca increases estradiol levels in menopausal women. It also relieves insomnia, anxiety and depression, and improves memory, concentration and energy levels. Maca also relieves hot flashes and vaginal dryness, improves libido and helps maintain a healthy weight. [10]

Maca as an antioxidant

Maca is a powerful, natural antioxidant that fights oxidative stress and prevents cell damage. Additionally, maca helps increase the level of the body's natural antioxidants: glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD).[13] Some research suggests that maca may also enhance the body's proper response to inflammatory factors.[2]

Maca, mood and cognitive health

In one clinical study involving middle-aged mice, maca was shown to improve cognitive function, motor coordination and endurance. An improvement in the function of respiratory system mitochondria and an enhancement of the autophagy process in the brain were also observed.[14]

Some studies also suggest the effect of maca on improving mood and its antidepressant effect.[1,2]

What is MacaCare™ organic maca and what makes it superior?

MacaCare™ is certified organic maca root extract from Peru's high-altitude Andean plateaus where maca has been cultivated for over 2000 years. Unlike standard maca powder, MacaCare™ uses concentrated extract providing higher levels of active compounds. The standardized extraction ensures consistent potency of maca's unique bioactive alkaloids called macamides and macaenes. Organic certification guarantees cultivation without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Traditional Peruvian preparation methods are combined with modern extraction technology. MacaCare™ includes the full spectrum of maca colors (red, black, yellow) providing complementary benefits—each color has distinct bioactive profiles supporting different aspects of health. For authentic, potent maca backed by traditional use and modern quality standards, MacaCare™ represents premium organic maca supplementation.

How does maca support energy, stamina, and athletic performance?

Maca enhances energy and athletic performance through multiple mechanisms. The root contains unique compounds supporting mitochondrial function and cellular energy production without stimulant effects. Clinical studies show maca improves endurance capacity, reduces perceived exertion, and supports faster recovery. Athletes report sustained energy throughout training and competition. Maca supports healthy cortisol responses to physical stress, helping maintain anabolic-catabolic balance. The adaptogenic properties enhance oxygen utilization and aerobic capacity. Research demonstrates cyclists taking maca showed improved time trial performance compared to placebo. Maca also supports muscle protein synthesis and lean body composition when combined with training. Unlike caffeine providing temporary stimulation, maca builds foundational energy capacity supporting sustained physical performance and vitality naturally.

What benefits does maca provide for hormonal balance and fertility?

Maca provides significant hormonal and reproductive health support for both men and women. Unlike phytoestrogens, maca doesn't contain hormones but supports healthy endocrine function through hypothalamic-pituitary axis modulation. In men, studies show maca increases sperm count, motility, and volume supporting male fertility. It supports healthy testosterone levels and libido without directly affecting sex hormones. In women, maca helps balance estrogen and progesterone supporting menstrual regularity and reducing menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. The adaptogenic properties help the body optimize its own hormone production. Maca supports fertility in both genders by improving reproductive organ function and gamete quality. For natural hormonal balance support, maca offers safe, effective endocrine modulation.

Can maca help with mood, stress resilience, and cognitive function?

Yes, maca provides notable mood and cognitive benefits through its adaptogenic and neuroprotective properties. Clinical trials demonstrate maca reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly in postmenopausal women. The root supports healthy neurotransmitter balance including dopamine and serotonin influencing mood regulation. Maca enhances stress resilience by modulating cortisol and supporting healthy HPA axis function. Users report improved mental clarity, focus, and memory with regular use. The high nutrient density including B vitamins supports brain energy metabolism. Maca's antioxidants protect brain cells from oxidative damage. Studies show maca improves learning and memory in animal models. For people experiencing stress-related mood concerns, cognitive fatigue, or seeking mental wellness support, maca offers comprehensive brain and mood benefits beyond its better-known energy and hormonal effects.

How should I take MacaCare™ organic maca for optimal benefits?

For general health, energy, and hormonal support, take 1500-3000 mg MacaCare™ maca extract daily—equivalent to several grams of raw maca powder due to concentration. Divide doses between morning and afternoon to support sustained energy. Take with meals to enhance absorption and minimize any mild digestive adjustment. For athletic performance, take 30-60 minutes before training. For hormonal and fertility support, consistent daily use for at least 12 weeks provides optimal benefits as maca's effects are cumulative. Maca is safe for long-term supplementation—Peruvian populations consume maca daily throughout life. Start with lower doses and gradually increase to assess personal tolerance. Maca can be cycled (5 days on, 2 days off) though continuous use is also effective. Combine with balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management for comprehensive vitality support.
