Food Sensitivity Relief with Diamine Oxidase (DAO)
60 delayed release vegetarian capsules
Item Catalog Number: 02533
Cheers to digestive comfort! If you experience occasional gas and stomach upset, as well as other gastrointestinal discomforts when enjoying wine, cured meats, cheese, fermented foods or citrus, you may have a sensitivity to dietary histamine. (Note: this is not the same as a food allergy.) Our formula helps you make friends with your food again by supporting the healthy breakdown of intestinal histamine to encourage gastrointestinal comfort.
Digestive comfort may not always be on the menu when we pair a glass of wine (or beer) with snacks like cured meats, cheeses, citrus and fermented foods. Food Sensitivity Relief with Diamine Oxidase is formulated to help relieve occasional non-allergy digestive discomfort associated with dietary histamine sensitivity.
Benefits at a glance:
Cured meats, cheeses, wine, and other histamine-rich foods make for a delicious charcuterie board, but not everyone can digest these treats comfortably. Our plant-based DAO formula helps relieve occasional non-allergy digestive discomfort associated with intestinal dietary histamine sensitivity. One more thing: many DAO formulas utilize enzymes derived from animals—usually pork. But our formula uses diamine oxidase from pea sprouts. It’s got the same capacity to break down histamine as animal-based DAO…no pork bellies required.
Short answer: a food sensitivity is when the body responds to compounds in the food you eat. A food sensitivity (sometimes referred to as a food intolerance) can cause occasional gastrointestinal discomfort, and is often difficult to identify. A food sensitivity is not an allergic reaction.
That said, non-allergy food sensitivities are more common than you think: currently, almost 20% of the Westernized world’s population experience some type of food intolerance.1 Histamine is a compound found in many foods and drinks that has been associated with food sensitivity.
Histamine is a compound found in many foods and drinks that has been associated with food sensitivity such as occasional gas, stomach upset, as well as other gastrointestinal discomforts.
Diamine oxidase (DAO) is the main enzyme that supports the healthy breakdown of intestinal histamine and encourages gastrointestinal comfort.
In a randomized clinical trial, participants who took dietary DAO supplementation 20 minutes before a main meal for eight weeks reported relief from occasional gastrointestinal discomfort.2
Research also points to the effectiveness of DAO supplements in inhibiting the incidence and intensity of discomfort due to occasional food sensitivity associated with intestinal dietary histamine sensitivity.3,4
Many sources of supplementary DAO are derived from pig kidneys. But our formula provides pea sprouts derived DAO with equivalent capacity to break down histamine as used in clinical studies.

Diamine oxidase (DAO) is an enzyme that breaks down histamine in the digestive tract. Histamine is present in many foods and produced by gut bacteria. When you don't have adequate DAO activity, histamine accumulates, potentially causing symptoms like headaches, digestive upset, skin issues, and nasal congestion. This is called histamine intolerance - not a true allergy but an inability to properly degrade dietary histamine.
Several factors can reduce DAO activity. Genetic variations can result in lower baseline DAO production. Gut inflammation or damage to intestinal cells where DAO is produced reduces levels. Certain medications (particularly some pain relievers and antibiotics) can inhibit DAO. Alcohol consumption temporarily blocks DAO activity. Nutrient deficiencies (vitamin B6, vitamin C, copper) needed for DAO function can impair its activity.
Taking DAO before meals provides the enzyme in the digestive tract where it can break down histamine from food before it's absorbed. This reduces the histamine load entering your system. DAO works locally in the gut and doesn't enter the bloodstream, so it doesn't affect histamine's beneficial roles elsewhere in the body.
Take DAO 15-30 minutes before meals, particularly before eating high-histamine foods. High-histamine foods include aged cheeses, fermented foods, cured meats, alcohol, certain fish, and leftover proteins. Some people take DAO before every meal, while others reserve it for meals likely to contain problematic foods.
If histamine intolerance is contributing to symptoms, DAO supplementation often provides noticeable relief. Headaches may reduce in frequency or severity. Digestive symptoms like bloating and discomfort may improve. Skin issues might clear. Nasal congestion could decrease. Response varies based on whether histamine is truly the issue and how much dietary histamine you're consuming.
